The Cranbrook Educational Community (CEC) is home to some of the most renowned schools in the United States. Half of the recognized schools are supervised by middle school districts, regional school agencies, which are generally headquartered at county borders. The Cranbrook and Kingswood schools were heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement, which began in 19th century England. In 1985, Cranbrook School and Kingswood School merged to create a blended higher school, the Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School.
News and World Report ranked more than 17,700 public schools in the country, and Michigan schools were among the richest 1% in a report published by the media company. High school did not become mixed; it was divided into gender-specific campuses in 1984. Cranbrook Kingswood now has 70 athletics teams; both the men's and women's teams won state championship titles in hockey, tennis, lacrosse, golf and swimming. The schools comprise a mixed elementary school, a high school with separate schools for boys and girls, and a mixed secondary school with boarding school. Unlike Cranbrook Children's School, which has several buildings, Kingswood School has a single building, which includes support facilities.
Cranbrook Kingswood accepts just under half of the applicants, placing it in the 25% of the most selective high schools in the United States. Architecture critic Paul Goldberger of The New York Times called the Cranbrook campus one of the best campuses ever created in the world. The design was chosen by William Oliver Stevens, the first director of the Cranbrook School, who drew it. Four Michigan high schools have been ranked among the top 100 in the country for the second year in a row by U.
S. News & World Report. Traditionally, Cranbrook School also has an exchange program with the Cranbrook School of Kent, a boarding school in Cranbrook, Kent, England, in honor of George Booth's heritage. These include day camps, a soccer clinic, a film seminar, a compensatory educational program for students from low-income families, a jazz ensemble, ice hockey, lacrosse and tennis camps, as well as the Cranbrook Theater School.
